Modern Miniature Kitchen Update

I've managed to dig myself out of the snow drifts to bring you a long over-do update. I hit a lot of design roadblocks the last couple of months and the kitchen has been sitting in pieces. I found it challenging to select windows, flooring and overall design style knowing it would continue throughout the rest of the open concept house.  Everything needs to be glued down yet but it's almost there I think, a few changes to make again but its very close!

January was spent designing, making and re-making the island and the windows/doors.  I have a lot of extra variations made of everything.  It seems to be my design process...  I can't really visualize it until I see it for real in the space.
February was consumed trying to get the design elements to compliment each other.  This was so frustrating.  The cabinets are a grey-beige and it's been really difficult to match the other components with it.  I made 6+ popsicle floors to find a colour.

Some projects that I did manage were the pull handles, the black range hood, creating 3 shelves in the upper cabinets, and selecting the marble and flooring pairing.  The floor stain I liked best is Minwax Weathered Oak with a a diy white wash below.

I also got some great new kitchen miniatures for Christmas.  These bar stools are by Boutique Miniatures on Etsy.  I loved that they are adjustable and very well made.

I also got some new white stemware and dishes, (mostly Chrysnbon pieces from miniature shops).

This post shows the true colour of the cabinets, the earlier post back in November had a lot of photoshop to adjust the lighting which made the cabinets look more blue-grey.  I actually like that tone a bit more so it really helps to see the two snapshots of progress.
Like I said a few more changes and fixes but I'm finally feeling more secure with the design and direction of the house now which makes it more motivating to blog again.  I'm working on a few more posts to go up soon too :)

Hope you all are doing well this winter! I've missed you!

  4. Good Morning Kristine! I was hoping to see a progress report on your MARVELOUS KITCHEN and what a BEAUTY it has become! I know Well, the work process that you mention; build it and then see if you like it. I work that way too. But This kitchen has exceeded anything that I could have ever imagine and I am IN AWE of your Creativity and your Design Sensibility. I love the window with the natural wood finish. It is such a warm counterpoint to the marble and has just enough grey in it to harmonize with the taupe/ grey cupboards. In Real LIfe, most of the interior of my home was painted with close to this same color. It IS a BEAUTIFUL color although it is as you say, difficult to match up. I also had the pickled wood floors in my
RL home so viewing you mini kitchen presents a bit of nostalgia for me.
I believe that you have Nailed this complex mixing of the various design elements of color, textures and a Great floor plan. You have executed this as well as any professional Interior Designer would. And what a great choice of the Industrial Bar Stools; Classic Modern Design. Also Love the solid white dishes that you have artfully arranged on the shelves. For me they are always my choice in Real Life, and 100% PERFECT for your Mini Kitchen! I guess you could say that I Love Everything that you have done, because you have done it all, SO WELLl:D

    1. Hi Elizabeth! Thank you so much! It made me feel so much better knowing that someone else had some trouble with the grey-beige! I do think the pickled floors are the best bet, I'm sure your home looked lovely with it!
I struggle most with design and style in making miniatures, but once I pick something things seem to go smoothly. I think I remember you trying to get the exterior and shutters of your cottage just right too! It pays off in the end for sure :) Thanks again!

  5. Oh my I love, LOVE the black herringbone floor. I may just steal that idea for a future build...thank you =0P Love the stools too. I've been deliberating over their draft table for months now but will probably end up trying to make one some time. Windows look fab, the floor you chose works really well and the white dishes stand out beautifully against the grey-beige. Fabulous work Kristine, we missed you too =0)

    1. Thank you!
Isn't that black floor gorgeous? I had to nix it because the black stools seemed to get lost in the darker floors. (I loved the drafting set too, so I asked for 3 stools to be made similar). My plan is to try a white wash chevron floor for the final installation but for the samples I just did regular planks. So we will see...I've been looking at the tutorial on your site for diy'ing with a veneer sheet. :)
